Saint John Don Bosco:

"Never read books you aren't sure about . . . even supposing that these bad books are very well written from a literary point of view. Let me ask you this: Would you drink something you knew was poisoned just because it was offered to you in a golden cup?"

Along Came a Dog by Meindert Dejong

The best page is the cover page. That’s because it lists 9 more books by Meindert Dejong. I hope your library has them all, assuming they are as good as this one.

DeJong’s book, The Wheel on the School, is recommended by Sonlight Curriculum, and I usually like their book suggestions. But our library didn’t have many of his books since they were published late 50’s or so.

The scene is set with a man talking aloud to the chickens whose cage he’s clearing on his little farm. His favorite little chicken has frozen her toes off, literally, in the cold barn over the winter. From his commentary, we quickly learn that the chicken has been lucky in survival already, and the man has a soft spot for her.
What to do about her inadequate feet?

Along comes a dog.

The kind-hearted man does not want to keep this dog and drives him away… literally. But he feels guilty, especially when the dog finds his way back.

The man is committed to helping the little red hen survive. Unbeknownst to him, the dog is still hiding out on the farm and helping the little hen to survive.

Sweet, enjoyable, and thoroughly safe reading…

SAFETY RATING: 3 Flags
